The Concept

Local milk on tap

In 2019 we installed our first two 24/7 milk vending machines - a great way for customers to enjoy farm fresh milk in reusable glass bottles. After being approached by several shops wanting a machine on their premises, Dan realised we would never be able to run so many machines ourselves so, in typical farmer fashion, he came up with a solution: the DDC Milk Refill Station!

Refill Revolution

We launched our first 50L refills in 2020 and they are now making their way into independent businesses across Southern England. Designed and built by Dan himself, these sleek machines do not use any single-use plastic, unlike small pergal machines, and give smaller shops the opportunity to be pioneers in the refill revolution. We are all about innovation so watch this space for our next invention!

Milk, the way it
should taste

Our milk vending and refill machines allow our local customers to buy fresh milk within days of the cows being milked compared to the dozen days, several processes, and hundreds of miles travelled by your average supermarket milk.

The Process

Early every morning, fresh milk is collected from the parlour and pumped into our vat while it’s still warm.

Unlike large milk processors, we do not homogenise our milk. We very gently heat it up to 65 degrees and hold it there for half an hour. This is how we extend the shelf life of the milk whilst preserving the taste of raw milk by not changing its structure.

Once the milk has cooled down, we fill up our milk barrels and place them in our milk refill machines.

Then, you can fill up one of our reusable glass bottles or any receptacle you wish with fresh, local milk. As our whole milk is not standardised to an industry-defined fat content, the butterfats range from 3.6% to 4.2%, varying with the seasons and the cows’ dietary changes as well as the weather.

"Nothing has been added or subtracted."

Homogenisation was brought in by large milk processors for purely aesthetical reasons – to stop milk from separating. It breaks down the fat globules to such a point that it is thought they can be absorbed through the lining of your stomach and into your bloodstream. By bypassing normal digestion in the stomach, the protein molecules attached to these fat globules are not completely assimilated which can lead to intolerances and allergies. So, by not homogenising our milk, it is easier to digest and the cream with naturally rise to the top - just give it a shake to mix it back in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to use the machines

Open the door to the supply zone and place your bottle in the centre. Select the amount you wish to dispense and pay either by coin or by card (contactless accepted). The machine will beep once it has finished dispensing. Screw the lid back onto the bottle and close the door. That simple!

Bottle cleaning

We sterilise our bottles before putting them in our vending machines, but it is the customers responsibility to sterilise them after each use. The easiest way to do this is to rinse the bottle out and run it and the lids through a dishwasher. Alternatively, they can be cleaned by hand in hot soapy water, thoroughly rinsed and then dried in the oven at 140°C for 20 mins.

How long does your milk last?

We suggest 4 days from the date of collection. If your bottle is clean and your fridge is cold, it should last longer. If in doubt give it a sniff!

When can I get semi-skimmed milk from your vending machines?

Semi-skimmed milk is available across all our machines on Mondays and Thursdays. We aim to swap tanks in Stalbridge by 9.30am, followed by Sturminster by 10am. Keep an eye out for the semi-skimmed sign.

Where can I get spare lids for my milk bottle?

We sell a pack of 10 lids for £1 at our Stalbridge and Sturminster milk stations.

I have a credit note from one of your milk machines, how do I get reimbursed?

Just send us a picture of your credit note along with your BACS details and we will send you a refund.
